Color Awakening by Unbox Color - An immersive experience of color, perception, and the city
During Lisbon Design Week, Unbox Color presents Color Awakening, an immersive installation exploring the spatial and emotional power of color in both interior and exterior environments.
The installation features a concentrated chromatic gradient, shifting continuously from yellow through orange, red, green, to ultramarine blue. Tones blend and dissolve into one another, creating a field of continuous transition. The experience is immediate and immersive: brighter hues draw attention, while deeper tones introduce calm and introspection, coexisting within the same visual field.
Complementing the gradient, sculptural cubes by Filipa Valente feature colored surfaces, providing subtle focal points that encourage visitors to engage with color from different perspectives and enhance perceptual depth.
Layers and transparencies allow tones to overlap and transform, so as visitors move, perception shifts with position, angle, and light, revealing variations in intensity and relationships across the gradient.
Extending beyond the gallery, visitors receive a color prompt from the installation along with a QR code linking to a template. They are invited to explore Lisbon Design Week and the city, observing how their assigned color appears in architecture, art, design, and everyday life. Participants capture 6 photographs, following gentle prompts for each:
Photographs are arranged in the template to create a personal composition, which participants share on social media using #lisbondesignweek and #unbox.color. This activity forms a collective, city-wide map of color perception, reinforcing the installation’s themes of observation, awareness, and awakening.
The project is a collaboration between Unbox Color founder Susan Fischer and architect and experiential designer Filipa Valente, who specializes in exhibitions, events, retail spaces, and brand activations, with clients including LinkedIn, Google, Coca-Cola, Porsche, and major cultural institutions.
This installation also launches Unbox Color’s new brand identity and website. The chromatic spectrum forms the foundation of the studio’s renewed visual language, linking the physical installation with its digital presence.
Through color, gradient, perspective, and perception, Color Awakening demonstrates how compressed chromatic transitions can shape atmosphere, influence mood, and extend into the city, inviting participants to experience Lisbon through the lens of color.
Located in the vibrant Príncipe Real neighborhood, the studio combines professional color consulting with educational experiences designed to help homeowners and design professionals develop confidence working with color. Unbox Color offers personalized consultations that guide clients in creating harmonious and expressive color schemes tailored to their spaces.
The studio represents the premium British paint brand The Little Greene Paint Company and presents a curated selection of colorful decorative finishes from Portuguese brands, highlighting craftsmanship and materiality.
Education is central to the studio’s mission. Unbox Color hosts its popular one-day “Color for Interiors” workshops, where participants learn practical approaches to selecting and combining colors for residential environments. The studio also organizes color talks and learning sessions in Portugal and internationally.
Susan Fischer is also the co-founder of Interiors Network Portugal, an organization created to bring together professionals and brands through networking initiatives and a shared platform for collaboration within the interiors industry.
