LDW Highlights

Mono presents the exhibition "A Contemplation of Form" for Lisbon Design Week. For this exhibition, ceramist Maud Téphany invites woodworker Rodolphe Renou to engage in a creative dialogue between clay and wood. A collaboration between two makers exploring shifting notions of form and volume.

By blending traditional techniques with experimental research, the makers bring to life a series of functional objects — side tables, stools, and lamps — each piece transcending its primary function to become an archetype, a structure, and a point of interaction.

Each work is a manifesto of assembly: a deliberate confrontation where materials retain their distinct identities. Interlocking like elemental building blocks, they form minimal structures where balance and imbalance coexist. Driven by an omnipresent geometry, this fundamental exploration invites a state of contemplation.

Maud Téphany
Ceramist based in Lisbon, Maud Téphany explores the boundaries between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary expressions. Her practice draws on a wide variety of media, from objects to sculptures, united by a unique artistic approach. Marked by a strong pictorial dimension, her creations bear witness to a constant desire to transform ceramics into a distinct visual language.
Originally a graduate in Art and Web Design, Maud Téphany has been fully dedicated to ceramics since 2012, developing exclusive projects for interior designers and crafting one-of-a-kind pieces for curators.

Rodolphe Renou
Woodworker based in Lisbon, working at the intersection of structure, precision, and material sensitivity. Self-taught, his background includes hands-on experience in carpentry, shaping a rigorous and detail-oriented approach to making. Deeply influenced by Japanese joinery, he trained in 2021 with Japanese master carpenter Takami Kawai, refining his understanding of traditional joinery and the discipline of tool sharpening. Working primarily with exotic wood species made accessible by Portugal’s wide selection, he seeks a balance between structural clarity and refined craftsmanship.

Mono
Founded in 2019, Mono is a multidisciplinary artist-run hub bridging the Lisbon neighborhoods of Graça and Penha de França. Spanning 800m², the space features an exhibition gallery, creative studios for permanent artists, and a dedicated residency program.

Mono’s main mission is to promote collective work between artists and other cultural actors, promote national and international exchanges and to enrich the development of critical thinking through questioning history, evolution, innovation and humanity. For Mono, an «artists-run-space» has the task of creating the necessary conditions for the sustainability, interdisciplinary and multiculturalism of contemporary creation.
Mono is a 800m2 space organised between a studio with permanent artists, exhibition space, and an artist-residence. Exhibitions welcome local, national and international artists. Concerts, performances and talks are also part of the programmation.

Mono is located in Penha de França, where there is still space for the development of artistic culture. It seeks to create a connection between the nearest neighbourhoods, such as Arroios and Graça, where there is already a panorama of contemporary art in development and contribute to the local environment with new cultural dynamics.
