Matilde César
Photography
Matilde César (b. 2002, Madeira Island, Portugal) is an audiovisual artist whose work
spans photography and cinema. Her practice is deeply influenced by the landscape of
the island where she grew up, exploring, through still and moving images — in both
digital and analog formats — the nuances of co-existing with nature, as well as notions
of territory, belonging, and identity.
She began her studies in 2020/2021 at NYU Tisch School of the Arts as a scholarship
recipient, and completed her degree in Photography at Universidade Lusófona, in
Lisbon, in 2024.
Her photographic work was featured in the group exhibition Duas Verdades, Uma
Mentira, presented at P28 in June 2024. In cinema, she made her debut with her first
short film, Foi Com o Mar, which premiered at IndieLisboa 2025 and was subsequently
selected for FilmIn – Revoluções Curtas, Entre Olhares 2025, and Azoreaniff 2026.
